2021 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid: Electrified Opulence
Bentley s plug-in-hybrid SUV is the start of the British brand s electrified future.
Bentley has already said that its future will be fully electric as soon as 2030. But the British brand s first electrified product, the new Bentayga hybrid SUV, is a rather small first step toward that goal, one that smoothly combines a modest amount of electric power and range with a turbocharged V-6 that runs on old-fashioned liquid hydrocarbons.
Despite its name, the Bentayga hybrid is actually a plug-in. It employs a 335-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 with a 126-hp electric motor sandwiched between the engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Combined output is 443 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. It s not like a football fan will not watch the finals just because it s the same two teams as the year before. Sure, the parallel doesn t really stand since team sports are completely unpredictable, whereas drag races between stock cars will only offer tiny variations. Still, that doesn t change the fact that seeing these two battle it out on the track is a real spectacle.
Porsche has always enjoyed plenty of respect in the industry, both from the other manufacturers and the public alike. However, that respect was built more on the brand s racing pedigree, not necessarily the raw power of its vehicles. However, every once in a while, the Germans like to remind us the only reason they re not the kings of drag racing is that they can t be bothered.
