Romanian leader tells Biden more NATO troops needed in east

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) Romania’s president told U.S. counterpart Joe Biden on Monday that more NATO troops are needed on the alliance’s eastern flank given Russia actions that are perceived as threatening by many in the region.
The appeal by President Klaus Iohannis came during a conference of regional leaders which Biden joined by video.
The Polish and Romanian leaders hailed Biden’s appearance as a sign of U.S. support for their security.

“The United States is the greatest guarantor of peace in the world,” Polish President Andrzej Duda said at a news conference in Bucharest after the meeting. “The presence of Joe Biden at the summit is a very important signal for me. It shows that the Euro-Atlantic bond is still alive.”

NATO members from Eastern Europe have pushed for a larger allied military presence on the bloc s eastern flank, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said on May 10 after a virtual summit of those states that was also joined by U.S. President Joe Biden. The worrying situation in the Black Sea, which we discussed in detail, proved that we have to keep being vigilant, Iohannis said in Bucharest.
The summit of the Bucharest Nine (B9), a group of European countries on the eastern edge of NATO, was jointly hosted by Iohannis and Polish President Andrzej Duda, who traveled to Bucharest in person.

The presidents of the Bucharest Nine, a group of countries forming Nato s eastern flank, point out permanent threat from Russia, Polish President Andrzej Duda said after the group s summit in Bucharest on Monday.
The Monday meeting was presided over by Duda and his Romanian counterpart, Klaus Iohannis. The meeting was also attended, in a virtual format, by US President Joe Biden and Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
Duda said that Biden in his speech confirmed the presence of US forces in the eastern flank of Nato.
