The ACT Party is praising the Government for cracking down on gang crime by proposing a ban on high-risk convicts from owning firearms. The Opposition ACT Party, the main critic of the Government s firearm reforms in the wake of the Christchurch mosque shootings, has welcomed the latest legislation. ACT deputy leader Brooke van Velden cited her colleague Nicole McKee s Member s Bill, which proposed to increase the power of police to seize assets connected with significant criminal activity.

A veteran social justice advocate says Labour should take a social policy approach to gangs and gun crime rather than try to one-up the National Party. This week Police Minister Poto Williams and Justice Minister Kris Faafoi announced plans for a Firearms Prohibition Order Bill to crack down on gun ownership by organised criminals - including gang members – and an amendment to the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act so those people would have to prove their assets were obtained legally. Denis O’Reilly says while anything that reduces gun crime is a good thing, the ministers are confusing criminal issues with the social issues that drove the creation of indigenous gangs.

Figures supplied by Police Minister Poto Williams are actually from March 2020 and were never updated to reflect changes to the rules. The National Party said it shows the buy-back was simply a PR exercise, rather than an effective way to get dangerous guns off the streets. According to the latest figures provided to RNZ, just over 600 guns were handed in during the three month buy-back.
