ATHENS, Ala. (WAFF) - The Athens Police Department will host a candlelight memorial on May 13 at 8 p.m. to honor nine officers who died in the line of duty while serving Athens and Limestone County.
The nine officers include:
● Chief Deputy James Henry Eubank
● David E. Temple
● Simmie L. Jeffries

Death investigation underway at Athens hotel
The investigation is ongoing.

Athens Police and the Limestone County coroner are investigating a death at an Athens hotel.
Coroner Mike West said his office was called to Econo Lodge at 1500 Hwy. 72 in Athens on Monday morning.
Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said it was an attended death, meaning someone was there with the person who died.
He said the investigation is ongoing.
West said the body has been taken to Huntsville for forensic examination.

Athens police officers recognized for saving two lives

Two Athens police officers are being recognized for recently saving lives during two roadside emergencies.

They saved two lives in two days.
On Feb. 26, first responders were sent to U.S. 31 and Interstate 65 for a call about an unresponsive person. When Officer Mac McWhorter and Officer William Newton arrived, they performed CPR until more help arrived.
Police learned a couple was traveling on the interstate when the husband started having chest pains and passed out. He was flown from the scene and later talking when they took off.
