A woman who was shot and killed as protesters stormed the Capitol in Washington D.C. is said to have been from San Diego. Her husband has identified her as 35-year-old Ashli Babbitt, a 14-year Air Force veteran. Babbitt was taken to the hospital where she later died from her injuries. Metropolitan Police Department Chief Robert Contee said Babbitt was shot by one Capitol police officer with a service weapon after demonstrators breached the building as Congress was trying to certify the electoral college results Wednesday afternoon. It has been reported that she was shot while climbing into the Capitol through a broken window. Babbitt is one of at least four who died during Wednesday’s protests at the U.S. Capitol.
The U.S. Capitol has been overrun by pro-Trump demonstrators, and the D.C. Metropolitan police believe protesters used "chemical irritants" on police to get access to the building. Police also confirmed one person has gunshot wounds.
The U.S. Capitol has been secured after authorities deployed smoke grenades and tear gas to steer pro-Trump rioters away from the government building ahead of a curfew imposed by D.C.
