Escapee shot dead in Cebu

(MANILA BULLETIN) Police identified the escapee as Alwen Cereño, 32. Cereno found a chance to escape while he was being transported back to the Mambaling Police Station after he was brought to the police molecular laboratory for a COVID-19 test. Police conducted a manhunt operation and found Cereno in Barangay Pardo. Cereno resisted arrest and opened fire at the pursuing lawmen who retaliated and killed him. Police Staff Sgt. Sergeant Chuby Caloscos was wounded in the leg during the shootout. The policeman was also shot in the body. Fortunately, he was wearing a bulletproof vest at the time. The policeman was presented to Philippine National Police chief Police Gen. Debold Sinas, who visited the Police Regional Office-Central Visayas headquarters Friday.

Prof. Regletto Imbong, convenor of Save Our Schools Network Cebu, said that instead of rescue operation, what happened last Monday was “over seizure.” “If we look at the standard protocols, there were many things that were violated,” Imbong said in a press conference at the Cebu Archbishop’s Palace last Tuesday. Imbong said the police did not coordinate with the administration of the University of San Carlos-Talamban Campus (USC-TC). The police also didn’t have search and arrest warrants when they barged into the retreat house and arrested seven persons, including a teacher, Imbong said.

The charges were filed by the Philippine National Police Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) before the Davao del Norte Provincial Prosecutors’ Office in Tagum City during virtual inquest proceedings held via Zoom videoconferencing app at the Police Regional Office Central Visayas (PRO 7) Wednesday.

P5 1-M shabu seized in Central Visayas

(Pixabay / FILE PHOTO / MANILA BULLETIN) Data released by the Police Regional Office-Central Visayas (PRO 7) showed that 101 anti-illegal drug operations were conducted from Feb. 1 to 7 in which 751.19 grams of shabu amounting to P5,108,092 were confiscated and 142 drug suspects were arrested. The Regional Police Drug Enforcement Unit seized 359.10 grams of shabu worth P2,441,880  from three persons in three separate operations. The Cebu City Police Office had the second highest haul with 277.91 grams of shabu worth P1,889,788.00 and the arrest of 40 persons in 27 operations. The Bohol Police Provincial Office confiscated 41.21 grams of shabu worth P280,228 in 11 operations and arrested 13 drug suspects. In the same period, 78 anti-illegal gambling operations in which  202 suspects and P18,786 were seized and arrested.
