DeSantis signs Polk County projects into Florida s $100 billion budget

It appears that Polk County escaped any vetoes of funding items in Florida’s $101.5 billion budget. Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office released a list of line-item vetoes Wednesday as he announced his signing of the appropriations bill in New Smyrna Beach. DeSantis trimmed about $1.5 billion from the budget submitted by the Florida Legislature. A scan of the veto list found no cuts for Polk County projects. By contrast, DeSantis vetoed about $1.4 million in local appropriations last year. Some Polk County legislators said before the session began in March that they would be more selective than usual in making funding requests. The state’s financial outlook appeared dire at that point as the financial effects of the COVID-19 pandemic caused a projected decline in state revenue.

Lakeland Regional Health hang origami swans to honor its 13,000 COVID-19 patients

and last updated 2021-05-13 22:35:10-04 LAKELAND, Fla. — Lakeland Regional Health is honoring its patients impacted by COVID-19 and recognizing its staff working tirelessly on the front line. “Looking at the swans hanging there, it makes a huge impact of emotion,” said Regina Wilkins, Nursing Professional Governance Manager at Lakeland Regional Health. The origami swans hanging on display at Lakeland Regional Health represent the more than 13,000 COVID-19 patients treated at the hospital since the beginning of the pandemic. As a managing nurse over the COVID-19 intensive care unit, Wilkins has been on the front line caring for those patients. “It really represents how a lot of the healthcare team felt as we were rolling through the last year. It just felt like they just kept coming in and we were fighting so hard to take care of them and help them get better,” she said.

Mayfaire by-the-Lake makes welcome return

Mayfaire by-the-Lake makes welcome return By Paul Catala For about 25 years, Lakeland acrylic gouache painter Stephen Koury has shown his realism wildlife and landscape artwork at the annual Mayfaire by-the-Lake art festival. For the past five years, Koury’s daughter, Sage, has taken to the festival stage to entertain the crowds with her singing.  This year, on Mother’s Day weekend, the Kourys once again were off Lake Morton Drive, simultaneously showing and performing their talents. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 Mayfaire by-the-Lake was cancelled.  Held Saturday and Sunday around Lake Morton on Lake Morton Drive just south of downtown Lakeland, since 1971, The Polk Museum of Art at Florida Southern College’s Mayfaire by-the Lake has become one of the United States’ most acclaimed juried outdoor art festivals. The free show is held each year on Mother’s Day weekend and this year, artists are competing for part of $17,000 in total prize money.
