Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Floridaâs controversial âanti-riotâ bill into law on Monday, a measure that vastly increases law enforcementâs powers to crack down on civil unrest.
The bill, which passed mostly along partisan lines, has been criticized by Democrats and civil rights groups as unconstitutional for infringing on the First Amendmentâs right to protest.
âIf you look at the breadth of this particular piece of legislation, it is the strongest anti-rioting, pro-law enforcement piece of legislation in the country,â DeSantis said at a press conference in Winter Haven, surrounded by Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, uniformed deputies and other law enforcement. âThereâs just nothing even close.â

Via Newsweek: This is what we enjoy in Florida. This is the Florida we know and love, Judd said as he held up photographs showing residents at Walt Disney World and the beach. We re a special place, and there are millions and millions of people who like to come here. And quite frankly, we like to have them here. So we only want to share one thing as you move in hundreds a day: Welcome to Florida. But don t register to vote and vote the stupid way you did up north, you ll get what they got, the sheriff added, prompting applause from the group of law enforcement officers, lawmakers and state officials gathered.
Polk county, Florida sheriff Grady Judd says that the Florida governor’s new anti-riot bill ‘reconfirms’ the police’s commitment to keep the community safe.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd joined Fox & Friends Tuesday and said that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis new anti-rioting bill sends a message that protests are fine, but violence is not.
GRADY JUDD:
[The bill] reconfirms our commitment to keep the community safe. Governor DeSantis, Chris Sprowls our Speaker of the House, Wilton Simpson our Senate President, worked together to say look, protests are fine. Peaceful protests are alright. But, rioting, looting, burning mom and pop out, ruining their lives that’s not acceptable. So this is all about keeping the 20 plus million people that live in Florida safe as well as the millions of people that visit with us every year.
