How many of us as mothers tell our children regularly how wonderful and beautiful they are? I can’t remember a day that went by without me telling my own daughter that she was beautiful and precious to me every morning.
So you can imagine the heartbreak of my own mother, when I came home from school one day, crying, telling her to stop calling me beautiful because she was lying. I was ugly. All the kids at school told me I was ugly, and that I looked like a Chinaman with small eyes. My mom wept. I didn’t have the heart to tell her about all the times my lunch was thrown in the trash by my schoolmates. I would often hide in the corner to hurry and eat the bulgogi (Korean barbecue beef) sandwich she packed for me to avoid being teased for eating “something disgusting.”

As she was writing her very first children’s book, Christine Paik was certain about one thing: the illustrations had to be done by her mother, Jung Lin Park. No exceptions.
Who else could capture the intricate details and emotional nuances in “The Girl in the Gold Dress,” a family-inspired intergenerational story?
“It was a make or break thing for me,” explained Paik. “Having my mom do the illustrating was part of the whole purpose of the book.”
The story is about Hannah, a 10-year-old girl who is embarrassed about doing a Korean dance performance at the talent show, especially because her friends are doing more conventional things like playing guitar and singing songs from “Frozen.”
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten was confirmed Tuesday as the nation’s next deputy education secretary.
The U.S. Senate voted 54-44 to confirm Marten, who was nominated for the post earlier this year by the Biden administration.
The school district applauded the move in a tweet that read, “Exciting news! We are proud to share that Superintendent Cindy Marten has been confirmed as the next U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education, and will prepare to transition from San Diego Unified to Washington, D.C., to serve President @JoeBiden and students nationwide.”
Lamont Jackson, San Diego Unified Area superintendent, is serving as interim superintendent through the end of the year until a permanent replacement is found.
