Wednesday’s briefing was conducted virtually, with no shortage of technical glitches and audio gaps. Administration officials appeared on Zoom from separate locations, in keeping with the Biden administration s efforts to model best practices for safe work habits in the pandemic.
One by one, the officials laid out administration efforts to contain the virus, speed vaccinations and bring Americans along with the effort..
“The White House respects and will follow the science, and the scientists will speak independently,” promised Andy Slavitt, a senior administration adviser on the pandemic.
Jeff Zients, the White House coronavirus coordinator, said the Biden administration was examining additional ways of speeding vaccine production, a day after the president announced the U.S. plans to provide states with enough doses for 300 million Americans by the end of summer.

BOSTON â Medical experts are worried that a new, highly contagious strain of the coronavirus could lead to another surge of infections and hospitalizations.
State health officials reported at least two cases of the new COVID-19 variant, known as B.1.1.7, in Massachusetts. They include the infection of a Boston woman in her 20s who recently traveled to the United Kingdom, where the variant was first detected.
Research has shown the new COVID-19 variant is more contagious than other strains, medical experts say, and could complicate efforts to prevent spread of the virus as the first vaccines are rolled out.
Southern states have higher rates of unreported COVID-19-related deaths than other regions of the country, according to a new study.
The study, led by Andrew Stokes, a professor of global health at Boston University School of Public Health, analyzed deaths in 787 U.S. counties that had more than 20 COVID-19 fatalities from Feb. 1 to Oct. 17, 2020. Georgia accounted for more than 50 of the counties studied. (Georgia has a high number of counties second most among the states.)
In the new study, the term “excess deaths’’ compares fatalities to recent population benchmarks.
Excess deaths can include both those that are directly attributed to COVID-19, and those without that direct link but either indirectly related to the pandemic or misclassified as other causes.

After months of planning
The Flaming Lips on Friday pulled off their first Space Bubble concert for the COVID-19 age.
The legendary alternative band has often deployed the plastic bubbles over the years as part of its revelatory live shows, with frontman
Wayne Coyne donning the plastic to roll across the top of the audience.
But on January 22, the band first used the plastic pods as a pandemic safety measure at Oklahoma City s Criterion theater.
The band provided 100 inflatable see-through plastic bubbles from which fans could enjoy the concert. Each bubble in the audience held up to three people, according to
