Celluloid Service - DBusiness Magazine

DBusiness Magazine Celluloid Service Starting more than a century ago, Detroit’s automakers commissioned thousands of films that rivaled Hollywood’s output through the 1950s. Reuther Library, Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs, Wayne State University As an aspiring actor, Bill Bixby worked as a lifeguard at a Los Angeles hotel in 1959 when, as the story goes, a Detroit advertising executive spotted him and offered him a chance to appear in an industrial film. It led to enough work that Bixby called the films “motion picture summer stock,” drawing a comparison to the theatrical standby that kept actors going year-round in repertory productions throughout the country.

Detroit Homecoming for 1953 Packard Patrician

There were stops at the Detroit Institute of Arts, the historic Hecker-Smiley Mansion on Woodward Avenue, Corktown, Ford’s Piquette Avenue plant, Comerica Park and the sorely neglected Michigan Central train depot in Detroit, which Ford is in the process of restoring. And most important, Jake visited the place of his birth: the Packard Motor Car Co. plant that churned out some of America’s most coveted vehicles from 1903 to 1956. Since then, the massive complex of concrete, brick and steel has become a shrine to utter abandonment. Mount Sinai to anchor West Side life sciences hub

Real estate brokerage CBRE expects the city s life science office space, currently 1.7 million square feet, to reach 4.2 million by 2025, according to a report released last month. Even with that expansion, the market is still tiny in comparison to the city s 500 million square feet of office space as well as the life science capacity of East Coast rival Boston. Yet we ve got exceptionally talented physicians, researchers and scientists who live and work here, said Jonathan Schmerin, a managing principal at Georgetown. It s evident to us that the industry is going to continue to grow dramatically in New York, given the quality of the existing institutions and the talent in those institutions.
