New York Yankees star infielder D.J. LeMahieu admitted after Sunday s loss to the Tampa Bay Rays that he felt personally frustrated by the team s 5-10 record that has the Bronx Bombers in the basement of the American League standings.
General manager Brian Cashman revealed while speaking with reporters on Monday he understands the Yankees are off to a really disappointing start but that he still has faith in manager Aaron Boone and hitting coach Marcus Thames turning things around. I ve got a lot of trust in the people we have, Cashman said, per Joon Lee of ESPN. I ve seen them work a lot of magic along the way. . We re not reactive. Bruce did not come close to meeting expectations offensively (.118 BA), which forced the Yankees to move DJ LeMahieu over to first base, and put Rougned Odor at second. Odor hasn’t faired much better than Bruce at the plate, batting just .125 in seven games entering play on Tuesday.

With the Yankees off to their worst start since 1997, Brian Cashman spent Monday’s off day fielding questions about his team’s struggles.

But Cashman understands that the team is playing uninspired, ugly baseball. Asked what bothered him most, he cited New York’s American League-worst 5-10 record before making specific note of the lineup’s lackluster production.
“Obviously, the offense is currently a prime target for what ails us because it’s something that’s a strength of ours,” Cashman said. “And it will be a strength of ours, but it’s currently not.”

With Voit out, the Yankees’ lineup has struggled mightily and his replacement at first base, Jay Bruce, could not fill his shoes adequately. Bruce hit .118/.231/.235 in 34 at-bats before he was ultimately benched. Over the weekend, the veteran made the decision to retire from MLB after 14 seasons.
In the meantime, DJ LeMahieu has shifted over to first with the newly acquired Rougned Odor sliding in at second. Odor hasn’t produced much better than Bruce, however, slashing just .125/.192/.250 in his first seven games in pinstripes.
