On March 2, voters in the WSESD will be asked if their town should withdraw from the district. They’ll also consider if their town should approve and ratify the withdrawal of Brattleboro, Dummerston, Guilford and/or Putney from the district. If a town votes no on the first article, it will remain part of WSESD. If a town votes no on the second article, it will prohibit other towns from withdrawing.

Patrick Murphy graduated from Brattleboro Union High School and embarked upon his career in Foreign Service, but Brattleboro has never been far from his heart. “I’ve spent half my life overseas, in a dozen or so countries, with time in Washington as well, and it all started with the BUHS Swiss Exchange started by French teacher Maggie Cassidy,” said Murphy, the U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia, during a Zoom interview with the Reformer. Through the Swiss Exchange, many of Cassidy’s French students and their Swiss counterparts spent part of their school year in their host communities.

She hopes serving on the Select Board will provide opportunities to bring about more immediate effects. “I guess I’m feeling antsy amidst the pandemic,” she said, finding more time to get involved in local government. She’s one of six candidates running for two one-year terms on the board in the March 2 election. Other candidates include incumbent Daniel Quipp, Evan Chadwick, Kurt Daims, Rikki Risatti and Jackson Stein. Gary Stroud dropped out of the race, citing a diagnosis of prostate cancer.
