Since vaccines became available and many people have taken advantage of getting immunized against COVID-19, area businesses are bracing for what could be a very busy summer.
âI believe the summer and fall season in southwestern Vermont and travel in general is going to be very hot,â said Matt Harrington, executive director of Southwestern Vermont Chamber of Commerce. âWith the vaccine in the majority of Americansâ arms, people not only feel safe and healthy to travel but many have postponed their vacations for a year now. Add on top of that events coming back including weddings, festivals and other gatherings.â

BRATTLEBORO â Itâs no secret that finding staff now is difficult.
âIâm hearing that across the board from lots of people â restaurants, you know, small factories,â said Greg Lesch, interim director of Brattleboro Area Chamber of Commerce, âskilled and not skilled.â
Lesch said it seems to be a statewide and nationwide problem.
âWe hear from employers on a daily basis about the need to hire,â said Adam Grinold, executive director of the Brattleboro Development Credit Corp.
Grinold said the sentiment expressed to him is, âIt used to be hard to find people. Now, itâs next to impossible.â
The Covered Bridge Inn on Putney Road in Brattleboro closed after all the guests checked out of their rooms on Memorial Day due to a shortage of staff. Needing 10 employees to run the property, the inn was down to three.
Whew! What a year!
Letâs just acknowledge it, the challenges weâve all shared have been arguably more daunting than any most of us have experienced â ever! And, while they havenât all disappeared, I think youâll agree that at long last itâs time to begin to right ourselves and get our local economy firing on all cylinders again ⦠and in new and exciting ways.
