May 1 will also introduce widespread relaxation of Covid restrictions in the city, officials announced, thanks to reduced citywide case numbers and high rates of vaccination. Should those trends continue, Mayor Bowser said additional changes could be introduced around July 4.

The number of people who can sit together at a table is increased from 6 people to 10 people. Live music will be allowed outdoors for summer gardens, courtyard dining, and sidewalk cafes controlled by the restaurants. Customers sitting outside can purchase alcohol without purchasing food.

Birmingham: City leaders likely will extend a mandate requiring face masks in public to slow the spread of the coronavirus despite the governor’s plan to end the statewide rule next month, said City Council President William Parker. While Gov. Kay Ivey has said the state order will expire April 9, Parker said officials in Birmingham have been in discussions with medical experts and will push to keep a requirement in place for face masks in public places. “I feel very confident that there will be a mask ordinance for the city of Birmingham,” he said Saturday at the opening of a new vaccination site. Montgomery: A state Senate committee has advanced a bill that would let the governor pick the state’s top public health official. The Senate Health Committee voted 8-3 on Wednesday to advance the bill by Sen. Jim McClendon to the Senate floor. McClendon, an optometrist, said the change would make the position more accountable to elected leaders. But two other doctors on the committee argued it is wrong to interject politics into public health decisions. The state health officer, a position currently held by Dr. Scott Harris, is selected by the state public health committee, which consists of members appointed by the Medical Association of the State of Alabama.
