Ashley Beecham pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis at Welshpool Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, January 12. Prosecutor Helen Tench said Beecham, 33, was stopped by police in Newtown on September 28 in possession of 1.5 grams of the Class B drug. “It was just before 4am when the defendant’s vehicle was stopped,” she said. “He told officers ‘I’ve got a joint’ and it had a street value of £10-15.” Acting in his own defence, Beecham explained that although an occasional smoker he doesn’t normally drive around with cannabis. He said. “I smoke it on occasion, I don’t usually carry it around. The reason it was on me was because I had been travelling from Birmingham at the time as I was moving to Wales with my ex-partner. I’ve already lost my licence due to this. I feel like this is part of my punishment.”
