The death of an elephant in the Nilgiris spotlights the tussle over a conservation project
The Sigur Elephant Corridor, connecting the Western and Eastern Ghats, is facing resistance because it will displace over 12,000 people.
The recent conflict between the owners of a homestay and a male elephant in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in the Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu, that led to the death of the tusker, has again brought into focus the tussle over land that is being earmarked for elephant movement in the area. The dispute, which has gone through years of litigation in the courts, got intense after the area to be acquired for the corridor was expanded, displacing those whose lives and livelihoods depended on the lands that were being earmarked for the animals.

On Saturday, Chief Minister
BS Yediyurappa announced that three forest-turned-eco-parks will be ready by June this year. While one more portion of the 400-acre Turahalli forest will be opened for public by April-end, parts of 102-acre

Humans must learn to co-exist with other forms of life, says court
The Madras High Court on Monday directed the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) to consider a suggestion made by an animal activist to appoint competent international veterinary consultants and rescuers, on a permanent basis, for avoiding frequent deaths of elephants due to unnatural causes in various forest divisions.
Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy held that the court could not issue a positive direction to appoint international experts as sought by animal lover S. Muralidharan, who had moved a public interest litigation petition. They, however, directed the PCCF to consider the petitioner’s representation within six weeks.
