Prince George Free Press » Health care map redrawn

The re-drawn map of health care in British Columbia — and where Prince George Regional Hospital fits on that map — will be unveiled before Christmas, says the minister of health. “We are at the final stages of that and expect announcements in the next couple of weeks – definitely before Christmas,” health services minister Colin Hansen told the Free Press. “Right now we have a myriad of health authorities around the province … Our goal is to significantly decrease the number of health authorities.” The current system of health care delivery in B.C. has now fewer than 52 individual authorities. Eleven are health regions, like the Northern Interior Health Region that encompasses Prince George and surrounding communities. That accounts for 50 per cent of the province’s geography, and 90 per cent of its population, says Mr. Hansen. When Melvin Marchewka was admitted to Prince George Regional Hospital on Aug. 16, he did not expect to spend 26 hours in agony on a stretcher, lying in his own urine. Marchewka suffers from spinal fibrosis, a condition which causes him pain and leaves him with limited use of his arms and legs. On good days he can walk with a cane or walker, but often he is restricted to a wheelchair. When his back pain got unmanageable on Aug. 16, he called an ambulance and was admitted to the emergency ward. “I was in and out of consciousness all night. They were trying to tell us they had no time for me,” Marchewka said. “They (hospital staff) were texting at night and talking about personal stuff. If they were so busy, why did they have time to talk about personal things … most of the night? I didn’t ask for anything special, I just needed care.”

Remembering a year of meeting people

Otto Arndt was born in Germany in 1939 and later came to Canada. He worked for a timber marking crew for the forest service and lived in a cabin in the Hart Highway area. He married Janice Rowan, the girl across the street. At the age of 20 and with two suitcases of his worldly belongings in hand, Bill Bosnich said a big goodbye to his family in northern Ontario and headed west. He got a job at the Canfor Plywood Mill in New Westminster in 1958 and a few years later he met and married Donna MacMillan. The couple moved to Pineview and in 2001 he retired after many years as a carpenter. In their retirement Bill and Donna have been enjoying their volunteer work at the Pineview Hall and by entertaining the community through their involvement with the Forever Young Chorus, the Country Cuzzins and the drama club at the Elder Citizens Recreation Centre.
