WOODBRIDGE, VA More than 40 people gathered in Woodbridge on Saturday to protest the hiring of new Prince William County Police Chief Peter Newsham. Protesters cited Newsham s record as the chief of police in Washington, D.C., and a lack of community input in his hiring as the cause of their unhappiness.
Newsham was hired by the Prince William County Board of Supervisors last year in a 7-1 vote. Margaret Franklin, Woodbridge s representative on the board, was the only supervisor to vote against Newsham s hiring. Newsham is scheduled to start as Prince William County s police chief on Monday, Feb. 1.
Shooting reported near Lowes in Woodbridge
A shooting was reported in a shopping center on Golansky Boulevard, near Lowes in Woodbridge.

Bristow woman killed after vehicle strikes utility pole
A woman from Bristow has died after a crash on Prince William Parkway.
Police were called to the intersection of Balls Ford Road and the parkway, near Gainesville, at 7:47 a.m. after a vehicle hit struck a utility pole.
The driver, identified as Nicole Alloua Gnangni, 58, of Bristow, was pronounced dead on the scene, police said. Investigators were looking into what caused the crash, and say alcohol is not a factor.

Suspect kills 2, wounds 3 and then kills himself in Virginia

MANASSAS, Va. Police say a northern Virginia man shot and killed a family member and wounded three others before fleeing and fatally shooting a passing motorist.
The suspect then shot and killed himself. Prince William County Police say they were alerted Wednesday at 6 p.m. to a domestic shooting in Manassas.
Police say 21-year-old Asa Mitchell shot and killed a family member, 55-year-old Eric Mitchell.
Three other family members, a 76-year-old woman, a 56-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy, were also shot but are expect to survive.
