Tam hopeful for summer even as Canada hits grim death milestone in pandemic

Article content OTTAWA Canada’s chief public health officer said Tuesday she expects Canadians who got the Oxford-AstraZeneca in the first round of vaccinations will be able to choose which vaccine they get for their second dose. Quebec immunization committee OKs use of Pfizer vaccine in youth 12 to 17

MONTREAL In more good news on the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, Quebec’s immunization committee formally recommended vaccinating younger teens with Pfizer-BioNTech doses. In a notice published Tuesday on the Comité sur l’immunisation du Québec (CIQ) website, the body gave the green light to offer the COVID-19 vaccine to youth 12 to 17 years old following promising results from Phase 3 clinical trials. As 12-15 year olds as well as many 16-17 year olds find themselves in a school environment, it might be appropriate to take advantage of this context to better reach them, the notice reads. The notice stated there were no major safety issues related to the vaccine in youth who participated in the trial, however, it noted youth experienced a fever after getting vaccinated at a higher rate than adults.

Experts divided on whether Quebec can change Constitution to claim nationhood

Article content Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday that Quebec can unilaterally rewrite certain sections of the Constitution to insert new provisions establishing the province as a “nation” and enshrining French as its “only” official language. “Our initial analysis, in terms of the Justice Department, has highlighted that it is perfectly legitimate for a province to modify the section of the Constitution that applies specifically to them,” Trudeau told a press briefing Tuesday morning. In his response in French, he said specifically that “Quebec has the right to modify a part of the Constitution.” We apologize, but this video has failed to load.
