EXPLAINER: Will you be getting a tax bill or a refund from Revenue due to Covid payments Reporter: 15 Jan 2021 );   ); Revenue has published provisional statistics in relation to the preliminary end of year tax position for all PAYE taxpayers for the year 2020 It reveals that 43% had a balanced position, meaning they paid the right amount of tax while 30% overpaid tax and/or USC totalling €436m but 27% underpaid tax and/or USC totalling €458m. According to Revenue, provisional data also indicates that over 706,000 taxpayers are in a refund position. For those PAYE taxpayers that were in receipt of one or more of the wage supports during 2020, about 47% are either due a refund or have no additional liability.

Revenue has appealed to people who are trying to access their preliminary end of year statement to be patient, after some users reported that its online system had slowed to a crawl. Revenue Assistant Secretary in the Personal Taxes Division, Declan Rigney, said the volume of users attempting to access the Revenue Online System was causing the delays. He added that this is not an issue that there is a deadline on and people should remember that they can access the information over the weekend or next week it they cannot access it today. In a post on Twitter, Revenue said it was aware of intermittent issues with its online services.
