Senators Encouraging Ohioans to Safely Dispose of Unused and Unwanted Prescription Medications Today, April 24 April 24, 2021 | Press Releases WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced Ohioans can safely dispose of unwanted and unused prescription drugs on “National Prescription Drug Take Back Day,” which begins today, Saturday, April 24 at 10:00 A.M. National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in an effort to provide safe, convenient and responsible means for disposal of prescription drugs, while also educating the public about the potential for misuse of medications.

The Leavenworth Times People wanting to clean out their medicine cabinets will have the opportunity this weekend to turn over old medications to local law enforcement officers for safe disposal. Area law enforcement agencies will once again be participating in a National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Law enforcement officers will operate collection sites at various locations. National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is coordinated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. According to a DEA website, the goal of the event is “to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.”

Properly disposing of unwanted medications is beneficial for multiple reasons, including environmental reasons. It can also help keep medications away from children and others who may abuse them. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), a survey showed the majority of misused prescription drugs were obtained by family and friends, many times from a home medicine cabinet.
