Representative image MUMBAI: For the third day in a row, the city registered more than 20 deaths, forcing the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to call for an audit of these deaths. On Friday, 673 cases and 27 deaths were reported in Mumbai. Considering that the daily deaths had dropped to single digits a couple of weeks ago, the sudden spurt has BMC health officials worried. Friday’s toll from the coronavirus was the highest in 23 days. “I have asked for the complete details of all these deaths as we fear that many of these victims may have been transferred from private hospitals to public ones in their last moments,” said BMC additional commissioner Suresh Kakani. He said that patients may have stayed in private hospitals till they had money to pay the bills and may have then been transferred to public centres.

The civic body in its Thursday stated has also added that the vaccination drive in the city will resume once fresh stock of vaccines is received.  Additionally, BMC on Thursday had informed the Bombay High Court that it has formulated draft guidelines to prevent fake vaccination camps at private housing societies, offices, educational institutions and other premises. The civic body had decided to appoint nodal officers, who will contact their ward war room in case of suspicion and will be responsible for monitoring anti-coronavirus vaccination camps at such places. Meanwhile, BMC also revealed that a total of 54,67,805 citizens have been inoculated with at least one jab in the city. Over 10,83,266 beneficiaries have received their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine as well. Currently, out of 399 COVID-19 vaccination centres which are active in the city, 281 are operated by the civic body, while 98 centres are private and 20 are government-run.

The move comes a day after the Mumbai police asked the civic body to cancel the license of the hospital for its suspected role in the fake vaccination camp scam. The role of the hospital and that of its owners, along with the arrested accused, is currently being investigated by the Mumbai police.

A division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice G S Kulkarni said this while disposing of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by one Brijesh Aarya, seeking directions to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to provide nutritious meals thrice a day, potable water, shelter and clean public toilets for homeless persons, beggars and poor people in the city.
