Notifications issued on delimitation, number of councillors

More than a month after the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Bill, 2020, was passed by the State legislature, the government issued two notifications one on the number of councillors and another on delimitation on Friday.
The number of councillors in the BBMP will be 243 with immediate effect.
With the number of wards increased from 198 to 243, the delimitation exercise will have to be taken up again. For this, a notification has been issued constituting a four-member Delimitation Commission. The commission, with a tenure of six months, will be headed by the BBMP Commissioner, while the other members are Deputy Commissioner of Bengaluru Urban district and Commissioner of Bangalore Development Authority (BDA); and BBMP’s Special Commissioner (Revenue) will be the member secretary of the commission.

Bengaluru, Dec 10: Terms of the mayor and deputy mayor of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will become 30 months and the number of wards in the City Corporation will go up from the present 198 to 243 when the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Bill, 2020, which was passed by the Karnataka Legislative Assembly becomes law.
The Karnataka State Legislative Assembly passed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Bill, 2020, on Thursday.
The Bill seeks a division of wards within the constituency of a member of the Legislative Assembly and no wards should be spread over to constituencies.

The long-standing demand to increase the term of Mayor is provided in the new bill. The term of office of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor is increased from one year to a period of five years, from the date of his/her election and shall continue in office till his successor is elected.
According to the bill, Bengaluru will have two mayors in five years, each getting a 30-month tenure.
Division into 15 zones
Bengaluru will be divided into zones up to 15 and each one will have a committee. Each zone will have a committee that will be responsible for execution of works.
