American Workers Risk Hearing Loss, But Solutions Exist An estimated 22 million American workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels at work each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).  Occupational hearing loss (OHL) is the third most common chronic physical condition among adults, after hypertension and arthritis – and it’s proven costly for employers. American businesses pay an estimated $242 million annually in workers compensation claims tied to hearing loss, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.   May is Better Hearing and Speech Month, and NIOSH, insurers, and various nonprofits, are spreading the word about hearing health.

Oil & Gas: Using Data to Understand and Address Safety and Health Issues -- Occupational Health & Safety

Oil & Gas: Using Data to Understand and Address Safety and Health Issues Finding the balance between productivity and safety is a universal challenge for all industries. In the oil and gas extraction industry, workers are confronted with unique hazards and challenges each day. Presented by members of the NIOSH Oil and Gas Extraction Safety and Health Program, this webinar will showcase how data drives NIOSH research and prevention activities in the upstream oil and gas industry. This session will describe how data are used to: draw attention to an industry with an elevated occupational fatality rate; influence the development of a new NIOSH research program; identify fatal events, workplace exposure hazards, and guide interventions; and inform the use of technologies and risk management systems to prevent fatigue-related incidents.

51% #1658: Sexual Harassment In The Workplace

30:00 On today’s 51%, I speak with long-time women’s rights attorney Gloria Allred about the allegations of sexual misconduct against New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, and pick her brain about what it means to be a feminist. And we’ll hear from New York State Senator Alessandra Biaggi about her own experiences with the governor. According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, about 7,500 claims of sexual harassment were submitted in 2019; this includes reports from the private sector and state and local government workplaces. It represents a 10% increase from 2015. According to a 2018 survey by the nonprofit “Stop Street Harassment,” 81 percent of women and 43 percent of men have experienced some form of sexual harassment during their lifetime. More than half of those women reported unwelcome sexual touching.
