Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian faced on Wednesday furious protesters blaming him for grave consequences of last year’s war in Nagorno-Karabakh during an impromptu visit to Armenia’s southeastern Syunik province.
Video reports showed local residents swearing at Pashinian, branding him a “capitulator” and “traitor” and demanding that he leave their community as he walked through Agarak, a small town on the Armenian-Iranian border.
“You are the capitulators,” Pashinian shouted back.
“We are going to sort this out as well. Dear people, I apologize to you for these types,” he said, appealing to other Agarak residents through a megaphone.

The population of a border village of Syunik complained about the Azerbaijani presence close to their community to the President and Human Rights Defender of Armenia, who visited the southern region on Wednesday.
The residents of Tcakaten were concerned, in particular, about the Azerbaijani troops deployed along the roadway connecting their village and other rural communities with the city of Kapan. The villagers said they avoid using the road, especially at late night hours, amid the Azerbaijanis’ continued threats to their physical security. Most complained about signboards and flags that served as grounds for the troops’ deployment, hampering the free movement of local civilians.

YEREVAN (Azatutyun.am) President Armen Sarkissian has refused to validate major amendments to Armenia’s Electoral Code which some opposition parties say are aimed at helping Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan win snap parliamentary elections expected in June.
The government-backed amendments passed by the National Assembly early this month changed the legal mechanism for electing the country’s next parliament.
Armenians have until now voted for not only parties and blocs but also their individual candidates running in nationwide constituencies. In the last two general elections, parliament seats were equally distributed among candidates picked through national party lists and individual races.

Armenia’s President Armen Sarkissian and Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan jointly visited Khnatsakh village of Armenia’s Syunik province.
“The prior issue in Khnatskah is the restoration of rights of the residents of the community violated after Azerbaijani armed forces appeared directly in the neighborhood of the village. Due to security issues the residents of the village cannot use their lands and gardens…. As a result people are being deprived of the source of family income,” the statement issued by the Ombudsman’s office says.
It also says that other rights of the residents, their health, physical and psychological immunity and other internationally recognized rights are violated.
