Key arrest over attempted assassination of Maldives ex-president Mohamed Nasheed

MALE, MALDIVES (AFP) - The police arrested a key suspect in the attempted assassination of Maldivian former president Mohamed Nasheed, officials said on Thursday (May 20), as the well-known climate change campaigner recovered in a German hospital. The unidentified man, reportedly a known Islamist extremist and the fourth person to be arrested, had parked a motorcycle rigged with a bomb that exploded in Male on May 6, police sources said. Mr Nasheed, 54, who famously held an underwater Cabinet meeting to highlight the dangers of rising sea levels for his low-lying nation, was flown to Germany last week following 16 hours of emergency surgery.
