The U.S. Congress overwhelmingly voted against an objection by U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, to the certification of Arizona s presidential election results.
The Wednesday night votes 93-6 in the U.S. Senate and 303-121 in the U.S. House came after Congress reconvened to certify Electoral College votes for president, hours after the U.S. Capitol devolved into chaos. Supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the building Wednesday afternoon, interrupting debate on certification. The disorder brought the discussion on Cruz s objection to a halt.

President Donald Trump’s frustrated and frantic efforts to nullify the results of the 2020 election resulted in a mob scene at the U.S. Capitol Wednesday. Hordes of protestors waving Trump banners along with American flags pushed up to, and into, the Capitol, disrupting Congress as it was trying to do its constitutional duty and verify the votes of the electoral college. Many Republicans in Congress were planning to contest the election results that give Joe Biden the win, but the protestors didn’t give them the chance.
This was an insurrection, an assault on our democracy, on our elected officials, and on the will of the people expressed in the 2020 election.
Scott Morrison told Australian travellers to avoid areas of the US where protests are occurring, while reminding them Covid-19 remains a serious health risk in the country.

An insurrection is defined is defined by Oxford Dictionary as “a violent uprising against an authority or government.” Make no mistake, this was an insurrection on American soil. A first of its kind in which an angry mob literally stormed the capitol and prevented Congress from carrying out its work.
