Geneva proposes asset freezes, travel bans ahead of HR sessions

An Extraordinary Gazette notification, pertaining to the nomination of Justice Abdul Hameed Dileep Nawaz, as the Chairman of a three-member Commission of Inquiry (CoI), to investigate, inquire into and report, or take required actions, regarding the findings of the former Commissions, or Committees, that investigated human rights violations, serious violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and other such offences, was issued on January 20.
The Extraordinary Gazette notification was issued, close on the heels of a ceremonial sitting of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, to welcome Justice Nawaz, Justice Kumudini Wickramasinghe and Justice Shiran Gooneratne. They were among six new Supreme Court justices, named on Dec 1, 2020, in terms of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, enacted two months before. The other new justices are Janaka de Silva, Achala Wengappuli and Mahinda Samayaward

Renuka Malshi Nuwangi went to St. Sebastian s Church in Katuwapitiya with her family on Jan. 24 and lit candles and prayed for all those who died in the 2019 Easter attacks. That evening, she saw several mothers crying in the church.
The feast of St. Sebastian was held on Jan. 20. Hundreds of faithful like Nuwangi, who could not attend the feast since it was a working day, came to the church on Sunday. Hundreds of Catholics visit the church to pray and offer their vows as a tradition until the last day of January.

Colombo (News 1st); Ex-Director of the Criminal Investigations Department Shani Abeysekera provided evidence to the Presidential Commission of Inquiry probing the 2019 April 21st Attacks, for the first time on Monday (25).
Abeysekera is held in remand custody and provided evidence from the National Hospital in Colombo via video technology.
Shani Abeysekera in his testimony said the investigations carried out following the 2019 April 21st Attacks revealed that the information passed on by Military Intelligence & State Intelligence Service on the killing of two police officers in Batticaloa in 2018, was inaccurate.
He said the information provided by both Military Intelligence & State Intelligence Service claimed a person connected to the LTTE had carried out the murders.

Colombo (News 1st); President Gotabaya Rajapaksa appointed a 3-member Commission of Inquiry (CoI) to investigate, inquire into and report or take necessary actions on findings of preceding Commissions or Committees appointed to investigate into human rights violations, serious violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and other such offenses.
The Extraordinary Gazette notification pertaining to this was issued on Thursday (21).
Supreme Court Judge A. H. M. D. Nawaz has been appointed as the Chairman of the Commission. Retired Inspector General of Police Chandra Fernando and retired District Secretary Nimal Abeysiri are the other members.
