The leadership of the umbrella body of Ijaw youths, the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC), has stated the reasons for the renewed agitations and threats to the peace pact between the Nigerian government and the people of the region.
The group said the threats of renewed violence by militant groups and attacks against oil facilities are caused by the failures of the Nigerian government to address contentious issues of development and empowerment of the region.

ABUJA-THE Niger Delta Youth Council,NDYC, has elected Comrade Collins Ufuoma Achakpekri as its Director for International Relations.
As director on international relations,Achakpekri is saddled with the responsibility to coordinate affairs of all youths of the region to ameliorate the several challenges experienced by its members abroad.
A statement signed by NDYC national coordinator, Engr. Jator Abido, explained that the election of a director for international relations became pertinent following barrage of complaints by youths undergoing scholarship programmes sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission,NDDC, Presidential Amnesty Programme and other beneficiaries from other multi-national oil companies of poor funding and welfare.

The Interim Administrator of Presidential Amnesty Programme, PAP, has said that beneficiaries of the training programme would henceforth be trained to dominate areas of food security, maritime sector and other areas of comparative advantage in the Niger Delta region.
Dikio stated that it has become important for amnesty beneficiaries to get actively involved in empowerment programmes that would guarantee food security in the region.
Dikio, in a speech at the Convocation and Investiture Ceremony of the Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State, said it was risky to continue depending on other region’s for food supply.
It is worthy to note that PAP has over 400 ex-agitators being trained in various faculties at the Gregory University under the programme’s formal education scholarship schemes.
