LOUISVILLE â In the Republic of Niger, there is roughly one nurse or nurse midwife for every 10,000 people, and the country is not alone in its need. By 2030, the World Health Organization estimates there will be a projected shortfall of 18 million health workers worldwide, mostly in low- and lower-middle income countries.
Niger has the highest fertility and population growth rates in the world. It is one of Africaâs most economically impoverished countries and ranks at the bottom (189th) of the United Nations Human Development Index, which measures a nationâs health, education and standards of living, as well as two other elements: a countryâs carbon dioxide emissions and its material footprint.

She was in the middle of her YAV year when the pandemic hit the U.S. The YAV year came to a halt, but rather than returning home, she chose to shelter-in-place at the YAV house in New Orleans so she could continue to serve as a volunteer with several YAV partner organizations.

LEXINGTON, Kentucky â In the midst of the deadly attack on the United States Capitol Jan. 6, people saw images such as a cross, flags including one that read âJesus is my savior, Trump is my President,â signs such as âHold the line patriots God wins,â and religious messages scrawled on a gallows erected at the Capitol.
