School Board deliberates continuing with resource officers

Dec 10, 2020 MANKATO — None of the community members who sounded off on the issue of police officers in Mankato schools had concerns about the officers themselves. During a workshop meeting Wednesday, School Board members noted most of the feedback they have received in opposition to school resource officers is based on general concerns heightened by national incidents of police violence. Mankato Area Public Schools held a series of community forums and an online survey about school resource officers. The School Board received a lengthy summary of the feedback and met Wednesday to discuss and hear more testimony. The contract between the school district and the city of Mankato to have officers at West and East high schools and Prairie Winds Middle School is expiring. The School Board will decide on Dec. 21 whether to renew, amend or allow the contract to expire. The district is currently paying the city $192,000 annually.

Perham-Dent schools helping families of essential workers with child care, instruction

The Perham-Dent School Board heard about how essential child care during distance learning has been structured Written By: RosaLin Alcoser | × Perham High School (Focus file photo) With all grades except kindergarten through second grade currently in distance learning, the Perham-Dent Public School District is providing child care for families of children in grades three through six who have been deemed as essential workers. Prairie Wind Middle School’s Intervention Specialist James Mulcahy updated the Perham-Dent School Board on the structure of the school’s current child care situation at the school board meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 9. Mulcahy said child care is housed in the middle school has seen between 26 and 38 students with students in the third grade making up the highest proportion of the students in care.
