Landslide in Norway leaves 10 injured, more than 20 missing

HELSINKI, Finland A landslide smashed into a residential area near the Norwegian capital Wednesday, injuring at least 10 people, leaving 21 unaccounted for and destroying several homes, authorities said. Some 700 people were evacuated amid fears of further landslides.
Norwegian police were alerted at 4 a.m. to the slide in the village of Ask, in the municipality of Gjerdrum, some 20 kilometers (12 miles) northeast of Oslo.
The landslide cut across a road through Ask, leaving a deep ravine that cars could not pass. Video footage showed dramatic scenes including one house falling into the ravine. Photos showed at least eight homes destroyed.
Two more houses collapsed into the hole on Wednesday afternoon, broadcaster NRK reported.
Norway s King Harald told of his sorrow for victims of the landslide. My thoughts are with all those who are affected, injured or have lost their homes and those who now live in fear and uncertainty of the full extent of the catastrophe, said King Harald, 83.
As night fell, helicopters continued to hover over the area, at times lowering emergency responders to the debris of collapsed houses. There could be people trapped . but at the same time we can t be sure because it is the New Year s holiday, which means people could be elsewhere, Prime Minister Erna Solberg said after visiting the site.

Dozens more people have been evacuated in the Norwegian village of Ask, which was hit by an enormous landslide overnight on Wednesday.
At least ten people remain missing as rescue efforts continue.
On Thursday, authorities said they had discovered fresh uncertain ground two kilometres from the village.
As a result, 46 people have been evacuated.
Police said the discovery is not detracting from their ongoing rescue operation. The search is still a rescue operation. We hope to find people alive, police task leader Dag Andre Sylju told NRK on Thursday morning. The landslide is still in motion, there are still buildings that are completely on the edge.
