Camera Club meets
The Rim Country Camera Club meets from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday Feb. 17 at the Lomona Lodge, Mount Cross Lutheran Church and via Zoom for those who wish to take part remotely. The lodge is on the southeast corner of the Mount Cross property at 601 E. Highway 260.
This month the club welcomes back John Ellis who spoke to the club last year on shooting night skies. This time, Ellis presents in person and offers illustrations of how to edit in Photoshop beyond the basic adjustments and sizing.
Ellis is a lifelong photographer/artist and has been in the industry for more than 40 years. He has been a member of the Professional Photographers of America since 1997, having achieved two degrees, Master of Photography (2014) and Master Artist (2019) â as well as Gold Photographer of the Year in 2014.
The awards ceremony was still streaming online, but Shannon Squires-Toews had stopped watching. She was talking to friends on the phone, saying how overwhelmed she felt by winning some top prizes in the Professional Photographers of America’s international print competition, often referred to as the Oscars of photography.
She almost missed them announcing her name again, this time as the prestigious competition’s award overall winner. She beat out more than 5,000 entries.
Squires-Toews burst into tears. Everyone around her, the friends and family gathered at her studio for a small watch party, started screaming.

“I was beside myself,” Squires-Toews, 37, said. “That wasn’t at all on my radar of possibilities at this point in my career.”

COLORADO SPRINGS â A picture is worth a thousand words and for a local photographer, that meant receiving $1,000 dollars for a picture she took. She recently won two national awards for her work by the National Photographers of America.
Shannon Squires-Toews owns Squires Co-Op Studio which opened in July 2020. It s where she took the award-winning photo.
She won first place in one category, then first place overall among 5,000 entries. We could compare this to the Superbowl. It is the highest honor you can get within the Professional Photographers of America, said Squires-Toews. They announced my image took the overall award and I burst into tears. It was a surreal. I m still just in a little bit disbelief.
