FAA puts unruly flyers on notice in aftermath of Capitol siege: Travel Weekly

| FAA administrator Steve Dickson has issued a warning to flyers in the aftermath of unruly incidents involving supporters of President Trump as they traveled to and from Washington last week. The FAA monitors and tracks all commercial passenger flights in real time, and reporting mechanisms are in place for crew members to identify any number of safety and security concerns that may arise in flight, Dickson said in a statement issued over the weekend, as fallout continued over the Jan. 6 attack by Trump supporters on the U.S. Capitol. This includes unruly passenger behavior, which can distract, disrupt and threaten crewmembers ability to conduct their key safety functions. The FAA will pursue strong enforcement action against anyone who endangers the safety of a flight, with penalties ranging from monetary fines to jail time.

Origin In the days before the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, several altercations took place on flights where supporters of President Donald Trump argued with other passengers, including heckling Sen. Mitt Romney as he arrived in Washington, D.C. These instances prompted airlines and unions representing flight attendants to express concern about in-flight security as some of the rioters began to leave the D.C. area. In response to these past incidents, and due to upcoming flights leaving the D.C. area, American Airlines has put protocols in place that include increased staffing at airports in the area, and suspending alcohol service on its flights to and from the region. They added that their crew members would not be staying in hotels in the downtown area.
