When Varun Chaudhury, executive director of Nepal-based CG Corp Global, the makers of Wai Wai noodles, applied to build a food park in India, he expected the effort to be an extension of the work his company already does. A leader in the food processing industry, the Rs 13,000 crore conglomerate’s business in India spans several sectors, from FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) to hospitality. Nonetheless, Chaudhury, who is steering the group’s FMCG arm, says he found the experience unexpectedly challenging, with what he describes as complicated and stringent regulations.

On March 1, India concluded its first spectrum auction of 2021. India’s Department of Telecom (DoT), through a Notice Inviting Applications (NIA) issued in January 2021, had put up spectrum for auction in multiple bands, including 700, 800, 900, 1800, 2100, 2300 and 2500 MHz bands. These frequencies cut across 2G, 3G and 4G service bands and included both FDD (paired) and TDD (unpaired) bands.
The auction was a qualified success. It netted the Government $10.6 billion and was almost double initial estimates. However, barely 37% of the total spectrum put up for auction had takers, while the 700 MHz band saw no bids at all.
Synopsis
The government expects that this scheme will result in an incremental production of Rs 2 lakh crore over the next five years and give India a sizeable foothold in the Rs 100 billion telecom and networking products exports market.
The guidelines to the scheme should also create enough room for Research and Development (R&D) to be considered within the purview of manufacturing.
