Welsh Beef joins Welsh Lamb in Oritain traceability deal Welsh Beef has joined Welsh Lamb in being traced and authenticated by food technology specialists Oritain, working in partnership with Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC).
HCC said with their Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and international premium brands, Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef are among the most sought-after meats by consumers and top chefs.
In 2018, HCC formed a pioneering partnership with food technology specialists Oritain to protect Welsh Lamb s credentials and reputation by authenticating genuine products through forensic science. After the success of this award-winning programme, they are now set to expand its reach to include Welsh Beef, providing an extra layer of reassurance to an already strong system of traceability from farm to fork.

The Cornish pasty had the rare distinction of being at the centre of a political storm when it became the flagship food highlighted as at risk due to plans to add VAT to bakery takeaways (the so-called pasty tax was introduced in 2013). And now it faces a new one.
The Cornish Pasty Association campaigned successfully to have the Cornish Pasty recognised as Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status in Europe, but a new pastygate could be on its way thanks to Brexit - PGI status remains in the EU – but not in the UK. Will this pave the way for one from another part of England.?

The French call Corsica “Ile de Beauté,” the beautiful island. And indeed, the rugged, mountainous landscape of this Mediterranean isle is spectacular, with mountains in the center, a narrow coastal strip and historic cities. The French territory also holds millennia worth of history, of grapes, invasions and fierce independence.
It breeds wines with connections to both Italy and mainland France, yet they express their individuality and are totally different.
This is an island that’s resurrecting its roots through culture, food and wine. The Mediterranean’s most mountainous isle, Corsica is situated 110 miles southeast of the French Provençal coast, 50 miles west of Italy’s Tuscan coast and just north of Sardinia. Because of its stellar, sometimes scary terrain, it has been left more natural than most islands here, with plenty of native grapes, other flora and fauna.

As the European Commission is considering how to regulate genetically modified (GM) products created with new GM technology, Eleonora Evi argues that the EU must continue to label all GM food as such, regardless of the technology used to produce it. [SHUTTERSTOCK]
