Last week, the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Bill (MTP) received the presidentâs assent and was notified by the Central government on March 25, 2021. The Bill amends the MTP Act 1971, which regulates the conditions under which a pregnancy may be aborted. The amendments to the new Bill increase the time period within which an abortion can be legally conducted.

To check increasing crimes against children, a top panel has recommended to the Union government that the age limit under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act be reduced from 18 to 16 years.
According to the data furnished by the committee, cases registered under POCSO rose from 32,608 in 2017 to 47,325 in 2019, which is an increase of nearly 45% in just a span of two years.

Madurai: A 50-year-old man was arrested by T Kallupatti police on Tuesday for allegedly sexually assaulting his 13-year-old step-daughter, impregnating her, and infecting her with HIV.
Ramamurthy, a resident of T Kallupatti in Madurai, was arrested by Madurai Police under various sections of POCSO. The girl, a class IV dropout, is in her 16th to 18th week of pregnancy. Tests also revealed that the survivor, her mother, and the accused are HIV positive.
The incident came to light when the 13-year-old girl was taken to a hospital after she complained of stomach ache. The doctors at Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) examined her and found her pregnant after she was admitted there on Sunday evening.

In an outrageous and horrifying incident reported from the coastal area of Uttan near Bhayandar, a fifteen-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by three men at a fish drying area near the premises of a local fish cold storage facility.
According to the police, the three men involved in the dastardly act have been arrested and booked under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for gang-rape and under the provisions of the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The incident which has sent shockwaves in the quaint fishing villages was reported from the Patan-Bunder area when the girl was sitting with her friend on Tuesday night. The three men (name withheld) aged 24 to 26 years suddenly appeared at the spot and started abusing and manhandling both the girls who started screaming for help.
