Registration opens for PMA’s Global Retail Week Produce Marketing Association (PMA) has opened registration and announced the schedule for Global Retail Week, a week of sessions focusing on the latest in consumer and retail trends in China, Latin America, U.S. & Canada and Europe. The sessions are free, exclusive to PMA members and take place June 7 - 11, 2021. “Our industry is unique in that our supply chain is critical to every region in the world,” said Anouk Sijmonsma, PMA vice-president of membership engagement. “We serve the global population healthy, nutritious, fresh products that are more essential now than ever. The goal of Global Retail Week is to bring our supply chain together to learn from each other and make the local successes global best practices while bringing global learnings to our local businesses.”

SEPC in full support of PMA and United Fresh merger Southeast Produce Council’s (SEPC) Executive Committee convened in early May and expressed full support of the recent merger between Produce Marketing Association (PMA) and United Fresh Produce Association (United Fresh) who will consolidate to create a new global trade association. Since its inception in 1999, SEPC’s mission has remained steadfast in promoting the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, specifically in the 10 Southeastern states it represents. There are many solutions that are needed to advance our industry into the future, and the SEPC applauds PMA and United Fresh for joining forces to prioritize value for their member groups. The SEPC welcomes future opportunities to work together with this new association to drive value and meet industry needs through aligned efforts.

North American pallet shortage to last for a longer period The lack of pallets is adding stress to a supply chain that is already facing significant challenges which include a lack of available trucks and shipping containers, ongoing labor challenges, fluctuating fuel costs, pandemic-related challenges and a pending shortage of resin used to make reusable containers and pallets. The current price of lumber, shortage of trucks and marine containers could affect the price of fresh produce and flowers, Ed Treacy with Produce Marketing Association warns. Due, in part, to the lumber shortage, there’s a shortage of pallets – a vital part of the production chain. Ed rings the bell on this topic and advises both the fresh produce as the floral industry to prepare for a longer period of pallet shortage.

United Fresh volunteer leadership groups to remain through 2021 With the recent decision of the Board of Directors and endorsement of the membership to combine with the Produce Marketing Association to form a new association in 2022, the current United Fresh Board of Directors, market segment boards and expert advisory councils will remain in place and continue to guide the association through 2021.   In addition, the current Chairman-Elect Danny Dumas, President of Courchesne Larose USA, will become Chairman of the Board effective June 1. He will take the reins from Michael Muzyk, President of Baldor Specialty Foods, who led the association through the pandemic year since March 2020.
