Australia’s Ambassador to US Calls on Biden to Rejoin Trans-Pacific Partnership
Australia’s Ambassador to the United States, Arthur Sinodinos, has called on U.S. President Joe Biden to rejoin the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
While the United States was an original member of the agreement, former President Donald Trump withdrew from the TPP after his election in 2016.
The remaining 11 countries then re-negotiated a new free trade agreement, the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), which was signed on March 8, 2018. The food and beverage market’s growth rate is forecasted to reach from 5-6 per cent annually in 2020-2025.
NESDC lists steps to win confidence

The state planning unit, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), has urged the government to expedite economic cooperation in a move to build up the confidence of foreign investors.
Danucha Pichayanan, NESDC secretary-general, said accelerated economic cooperation would enable Thailand to enjoy better benefits more quickly from a global economic recovery and an upward trend in world trade and stimulus packages among the leading economies. The government is still counting on foreign investment to drive the Thai economy this year, said Mr Danucha. If the government comes up with a more proactive role to make further progress in regional economic cooperation, there is the belief that foreign investors would make a faster decision in terms of investment in Thailand.
Jostling for attention across the Indo-Pacific is a motley mix of democracies and authoritarian regimes as well as governments which are quite simply neither one nor the other.

International events extend time for submissions to Trans-Pacific Partnership inquiry
In response to the new Biden administration in the United States and also the United Kingdom declaring it wants to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) trade agreement, an Australian parliamentary inquiry looking at the merits of expanding the CPTPP’s membership has extended the closing date for submissions to 16 April 2021.
Chair of the Trade Sub-Committee of the Joint Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee, Ted O’Brien, wants to allow more time for submissions to the inquiry.
“The election of the Biden administration and the new President’s longstanding support for trade liberalisation is no small matter,” said Mr O’Brien.
