Six leading candidates running in the Democratic primary for New York City Comptroller in the June election appeared at a forum on Tuesday to offer their perspectives on the role of the office, solutions to the city’s uncertain fiscal future, and how they would wield their powers to ensure city government is effective and fiscally responsible.  The candidates at the forum, hosted by Citizens Budget Commission, a nonprofit fiscal watchdog group, included Brooklyn City Council Member Brad Lander, military veteran and entrepreneur Zach Iscol, Manhattan State Senator Brian Benjamin, financial journalist Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, and Queens Assemblymember David Weprin. The candidates, selected by CBC from about 10 who will be on the ballot, seemingly based on their fundraising and polling, sought to tout their credentials and set their campaigns apart with just six weeks till the primary, which will be run with ranked-choice voting for the first time

MAYOR DE BLASIO PRESENT S NYC S PRELIMINARY BUDGET FOR FISCAL YEAR 2022   According to the mayor, there is a $1.5 billion revenue decline due to the pandemic, driven by $2.5 billion decline in property tax revenue, and the city has seen $5.9 billion in unexpected costs since the start of the pandemic “After one of the most painful years in our City’s history, this budget puts us on a path to recovery while making responsible choices in light of steep revenue losses due to COVID-19. President-elect Biden will help our recovery by increasing FEMA reimbursement, and new Democratic majorities in Congress must move us forward with a federal COVID relief package that includes direct local aid.”

NYC agencies directed to cut costs before start of preliminary budget process: de Blasio Michael Gartland New York City’s government agencies will be required to cut costs in the ramp-up to the preliminary budget process that begins in January, Mayor de Blasio said Tuesday. The savings regimen “Program to Eliminate the Gap,” or PEG will be applied to all city agencies. “What has been put there initially is simply to get ideas and proposals back from agencies. It’s not the final plan by any stretch,” de Blasio said at a press briefing. “The big x-factor is what I hope and believe will happen, that President Biden will come in and really focus on a serious, large stimulus. But until we know that we have to prepare for the worst.”
