The Centre on Tuesday said 28 states and Union territories have started lifting additional foodgrains meant for free distribution to 80 crore beneficiaries for two months under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY). PMGKAY has been reintroduced for two months May and June to ameliorate the hardships faced by the poor and needy due to various disruptions caused by the resurgence of COVID-19 in the country, it said. Under the PMGKAY, additional foodgrains are provided free of cost via ration shops to 80 crore beneficiaries registered under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). In a statement, the Food Ministry said that the state-run Food Corporation of India (FCI) has already positioned sufficient foodgrains in all states and UTs for the successful implementation of the scheme.

In Telangana, the total number of persons who benefited under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY) scheme are 1.92 crore with a total distribution of 1.92 lakh metric tonnes of rice to be distributed by the end of the month, according to Mr. Ashwani Kumar Gupta, General Manager of Food Corporation of India (Telangana).
In a media release on Thursday, the top official said that the PMGKAY had reintroduced by the Government of India for May and June 2021.
“This is a pro-poor scheme to ameliorate the hardships faced by the poor due to economic disruption caused by the Covid pandemic,” he said.

The scheme will comprise only cereals such as wheat, rice Unlike last year, the government will not be distributing pulses as part of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana (PM-GKAY) and the scheme will comprise only cereals such as wheat and rice, Food and Public Distribution Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey said on Saturday.
As much as 80 lakh tonnes of foodgrains will be distributed to 80 crore belonging to Antyodaya Ann Yojana and Priority Households during May and June incurring a total expenditure of ₹ 26,000 crore. This will be over and above their entitlement under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
During PM-GKAY during April to November last year, the government distributed 298.89 lakh tonnes of foodgrains at a cost of around ₹1.05 lakh crore. Almost 93 per cent of the NFSA beneficiaries received benefits under the PM-GKAY scheme.

New Delhi [India], April 23 (ANI): The Government of India is set to provide free food grains under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY) for the month of May and June 2021.
Under the PMGKAY, 5 kg free food grains will be provided to the poor for the month of the next two months. Around 80 crore beneficiaries will get free food grains under this scheme, the government said.
It added that in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi s commitment to the poor, the Centre has decided to provide free food grains to 80 crore beneficiaries, on the same pattern as last year s PM Garib Kalyan Yojana.
