Johnstown kindergarten, pre-k signups | News, Sports, Jobs

Mar 8, 2021 JOHNSTOWN The Greater Johnstown School District will conduct the open enrollment for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students for the 2021-2022 school year from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. the week of March 29-April 1. The applications will not be accepted prior to March 29, according to a news release. To be eligible to apply for pre-K, children must be 4 years old on or before Dec. 1. To be eligible to register for kindergarten, children must be 5 years old on or before Dec. 1. The kindergarten at GJSD is a full day program. The pre-K at GJSD is currently a half-day program. The school district will notify applicants if state grant funding becomes available at a future date that allows for full-day pre-kindergarten. manich@leaderherald.com JOHNSTOWN The city school with the youngest students will be the first to reopen four days a week for in-person instruction on March 15, the Greater Johnstown School District Board of Education heard Thursday night. Pleasant Avenue Elementary School Principal Corinne Cotter gave a presentation on a “reopening plan” for her school in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. The school teaches grades K-2. Cotter said the plan keeps both learning models the district currently has in-person and remote learning. She said some students will now have live in-person instruction at the school four days week – Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. There will also be two fine arts and two physical education special classes. Those students remaining in the remote model will also have instruction four days per week.

GJSD: All students need internet access | News, Sports, Jobs

manich@leaderherald.com JOHNSTOWN The Greater Johnstown School District like other school systems is working hard on trying to get more students connected to the internet for remote learning purposes. Superintendent William Crankshaw, in his recent report to the Board of Education, said 8 percent of the Johnstown students don’t have internet connectivity. The connections are important in the learning process during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. He said instruction has been “strong,” but not always coordinated. In conjunction with the fight against COVID, Crankshaw reported that district staff and faculty are “actively making appointments” for COVID vaccinations The superintendent said he already had his first of two shots.
