Longtime Lewis and Clark County public health official steps down

This past year may have been the most frustrating of Eric Merchant s 23 years of public service, but the Lewis and Clark County health official said it is also the one year in his career of which he is proudest. The Lewis and Clark Public Health disease control and prevention administrator retired from his post Wednesday, following possibly the most tumultuous year in the history of the profession. Public health employees in Lewis and Clark County and across the country have been demonized for more than a year by many who believe their efforts to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 went too far.

Montana Senate backs Colstrip coal switch

TOM LUTEY Coal is back on the menu at the Montana Senate where Republicans voted to make it easier for Colstrip Power Plant to cut ties with neighboring Rosebud Mine, or alter its coal supply. The mine and power plant are a short walk away from each other, but have been miles apart on coal pricing in recent years. A pivot by Colstrip Power Plant owners to a different coal mine would likely be the end of Rosebud, which sells nearly all of its coal to Colstrip. “What this does is it allows the plant at Colstrip to buy coal from different sources, and that allows the plant to be run for a cheaper price,” said Sen. Steve Fitzpatrick, Republican from Great Falls. “Right now, they have to get all the coal from the mine at the mouth. What this bill will allow them to do is get coal from other facilities they can bring it on in a train, they can bring it in somewhere else.”

Contract awarded for rest area near Three Forks

The Montana Transportation Commission has awarded a construction contract for a new rest area near Three Forks, intended to replace the existing facility at the Interstate 90/19th Street interchange in Bozeman. William Fogarty, district administrator for the Montana Department of Transportation, said the commission on April 22 awarded the contract to Montana Rest Area JV Partners, a partnership of C.A. Rickert & Associates and Diamond Construction, Inc. The team submitted what the commission felt was the “apparent best value” bid of $2.69 million to build a new rest area facility about a half-mile north of the Wheat Montana Bakery and Deli on the west side of Highway 287.
