The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency adopted a new standard for selenium waste in Montanaâs Kootenai River and Koocanusa Reservoir on Thursday, after the Legislature dropped plans to revoke the state rule.
âEPAâs action is based on a thorough technical review of the Stateâs submission and a determination that the adopted standards are based on sound science and consistent with the Clean Water Act,â EPA spokeswoman Laura Flynn Jenkins wrote in an emailed statement.
âMontanaâs revised standards will strengthen ongoing efforts to address selenium concerns in surface waters, fish and aquatic life within the Kootenai River watershed.â

MISSOULA â The Montana Legislatureâs efforts to preempt the will of local voters and the mandate of their elected city and county leaders continues to draw the ire of Missoula officials, who are lining up to oppose the latest piece of legislation.
The newest preemptive bill, introduced by Sen. Jason Small, R-Busby, aims to prevent local governments from âimposing carbon penalties, fees or taxesâ based upon carbon use. While the intent of the bill is unclear, Missoula officials believe it could slow their efforts around carbon neutrality and clean electricity.
