MPCB issues closure notice to a chemical unit in Palghar

The
Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has issued a closure notice to a chemical unit in Palghar for allegedly violating various pollution norms.
MPCB’s regional office at
Thane issued the notice on January 25. The MPCB had asked the chemical unit – Seya Industries Limited, located at Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), in Tarapur to shut the manufacturing in 72 hours.
MPCB alleged that the chemical unit has not been adhering to pollution prevention norms. In the notice, MPCB has listed several lapses by MIDC – including consumption of coal more than the consented limit, non-disposal of any hazardous waste to the Common Hazardous Waste treatment among others from April to October last year.

New Delhi: The Bombay high court observed that if agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and the judiciary, do not act independently, there is a threat to democracy in the country.
A division bench, comprising Justices S.S. Shinde and Manish Pitale made the observation on Thursday, January 21, while hearing a petition filed by former revenue minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Khadse, who requested the court to quash an ED complaint registered against him in a land grabbing case in Pune last year.

The Pune police, a forensic team and officials from three Maharashtra government agencies on Friday started an investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire at the Serum Institute of India’s premises, reported PTI. The blaze claimed five lives.
“Our investigation started today afternoon,” Pune Police Commissioner Amitabh Gupta said on Friday. “Our crime branch team, [and] a forensic team reached the spot to begin the probe.”
