In rural parts of the state, where households cannot even afford a basic smartphone, these saviours used innovative ways, while taking great risks to their health, to ensure their students weren’t hit
Among those who were hit the hardest when the country went into an overnight lockdown last March to curb the spread of Covid-19 were students. Their schooling almost instantly ground to a halt – and what at first may have seemed like a god-send holiday soon turned into a nightmare as the pandemic began to unfold.
In the first week, 9,127 out of 22,204 schools reopened and 2.9 lakh students attended. Up from that, 19,524 schools resumed operations as of January 4
MUMBAI: Nearly a month-and-a-half after the state permitted schools to resume physical sessions for classes IX to XII, over 88% schools have reopened and over 15.7 lakh students are attending each day, according to education department data.
The state permitted the classes to reopen on November 23. Teachers and non-teaching staff had to undergo RT-PCR tests and those who tested negative for Covid-19 were allowed to resume. Among nearly two lakh teaching and non-teaching staff who have undergone the test before joining school, 2,894 tested positive.

MUMBAI: Three weeks after schools partially reopened in parts of the state, student attendance was up to 10 lakh on Monday. The number of schools that resumed physical classes for grades IX to XII is also up from 35% on November 23 to 70% on Monday.
The state education department allowed schools to resume physical classes on alternate days for grades IX to XII from November 23. Most civic corporations, including Mumbai, Thane and Nashik, did not permit reopening, but schools opened in most other parts of the state. Teachers were required to undergo an RT-PCR test prior to joining. Of the nearly two lakh teaching and non-teaching staff who underwent the test, only 2,894 tested positive.
