The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to interfere with the Bombay High Court order for a CBI probe into former Mumbai police chief Param Bir Singh’s allegations of corruption against former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.
“We are of the view that the nature of allegations, the persons involved and the seriousness of the allegations do require an independent agency to inquire into the matter,” a Bench headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul said, without getting into niceties of the high court’s order.
Terming it “a matter of public confidence”, it said, “We are not inclined to interfere with the impugned order(s).” On behalf of Deshmukh and Maharashtra Government, senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi contended that a CBI probe couldn’t be ordered on the basis of unsubstantiated allegations.

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 9 (ANI): Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recorded the statement of Mahesh Shetty, a bar owner who is close to Sachin Waze, in connection with extortion allegations against former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.
Mahesh Shetty s statement was also recorded by National Investigation Agency (NIA) earlier today, in connection with Antilia bomb scare case and Mansukh Hiren death case.
The CBI on Friday, once again recorded the statement of suspended Mumbai Police officer Sachin Waze in connection with the investigation on allegations levelled by former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh against Anil Deshmukh.

On Tuesday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recorded his statement in which he once again accused Anil Deshmukh of asking police officers to collect Rs 100 crore per month for him through extortion.
Param Bir Singh first levelled these allegations on March 20 in a letter addressed to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. Anil Deshmukh has rubbished these charges and threatened to file a defamation suit against him.
