Woman suffers life-threatening injuries in Calen crash

Premium Content Subscriber only UPDATE 8.15AM: Police are investigating a serious crash near Calen which left a woman with life-threatening injuries. About 2am Sunday, a Toyota Landcruiser travelling on the Bruce Highway near the intersection with McDermotts Road failed to navigate a bend and travelled off the roadway. The vehicle struck the driveway of a property before rolling. The 28-year-old female driver and sole occupant of the vehicle received life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash. She was flown to the Townsville Hospital for treatment where she remains in a critical, but stable condition. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the incident.

Gilbert rules out plans for Mackay health services merger

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath on Wednesday raised concerns about the North West HHS’s governance and financial management, with a “show cause” issued on why the board should not be dismissed. North West HHS recorded an $8 million operating deficit in 2019-20. Mackay MP Julieanne Gilbert on Thursday praised the state government had “confidence” in the MHHS, and said there were no immediate plans for a health merger with other districts. The MHHS is one of 16 across the state which manage health services and report to the Health Minister. Eleven of the 16 HHSs recorded losses in 2019-20, despite just one planning for a loss.
