We have a collected total of about 415 different types of pads, tampons and gently used bras that we collected over two weeks, she explained. It s the result of donation drives at Hampton High School, organized by some of the students in the school s rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) program. It was Maria who got the ball rolling.

She managed to live through physical domestic abuse, escaping repeated assaults from a former boyfriend. But she has not let that trauma define her. What started as a way to defend herself has become a two-pronged passion: Boxing and helping others. “I just remember what it s like. Deb Sanderson gives consistently. I do; this is my 55th time! Yes, the day we caught up with her, it was her 55th time giving blood. She says she tries to donate five times a year. Why? Because her blood type is O negative. That s a big deal. Just ask Sean Ryan, who s with the Red Cross and was helping with that blood drive.
